PANCHASE- THE CAMPING TREK!

Few places in the world have such a splendid variety of natural beauty as the Annapurna region. It is a rare combination of long arrays of snow-capped peaks, crystal clear lakes, and turbulent rivers with deep gorges, Tibetan monasteries, hot-springs, and picturesque villages; inhabited by the simple and friendly ethnic people of the region.

There are a number of relatively easy short treks that can be undertaken around Pokhara. The area south of Phewa Taal is particularly suitable for this. This area, however, has fewer accommodation facilities so self-sufficiency is generally required. These trekking routes pass through some very attractive rural communities and the low altitude makes for a perfect winter trek, however; it can get uncomfortably hot during the summer months. The trail is also rich in birdlife.

Possibly the most attractive destination for a short and easy camping trek, the Panchase is a 2510 meter high hill located west of Pokhara. The trail follows the ridge that runs through the villages of Bhumdi and Pumdi via World Peace Stupa and provides excellent Mountain Views. Panchace hill has a breathtaking Himalayan Panorama that rivals none other than the one found at the Poon hill. The spectacular views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massif in addition to the area’s most beautiful and sacred mountain- Machhapuchhare (Fishtail) is visible from this hilltop.

Panchase is easily accessible from the village of Bhadaure, which can be reached on foot or vehicle from Naudanda. From Bhadaure it is a pleasant three to four hours walk through the forest to Panchase Deurali where some basic lodging is available. The hilltops are a further hour or so from here. The best season for this trek is from January to May and October to mid December.

Following is a standard itinerary for the Panchase Trek. However, it can also be tailor- made to meet your specific requirements:
Day01: To Pokhara and overnight
Day02: Begin trek to Bhumdi (1825m) and overnight camping. (Takes about 5 -6 hours)
Day03: Continue trek to Bhanjyang (2200m) and overnight camping. (6 hours)
Day04: Trek to Bhadaure and overnight camping. Early morning hike to Panchase Hill for the mountain views and return to camp and trek
Day05: Trek to Kare and drive back to Pokhara
Day06: Return to Kathmandu

Duration of the trek: 6 days (3 nights 4 days + 2 nights in Pokhara)

If you are looking to take your trekking up to the next level then a visit to a good trekking company will be of great help in helping you to get the information and ideas that you need. A good trekking company may specialise in trekking in certain region or a certain type of trek, such as mt kenya or kilimanjaro trekking, or they may specialise in simply arranging your travel and accommodation for international treks or they may just be involved in equipment procurement and will be able to help you to get any equipment that you need for your various trekking adventures.

There are a number of good trekking companies in kenya. However, you should also be able to find a suitable trekking company online. In fact, in many cases you will be better off looking for a trekking company online simply because you can go to the sites with the best reputations and be confident that you are dealing with people who know what they are talking about and will be able to help you and make your trip a success. Your safety will also be a concern and whether it be your travel arrangements or your equipment, you do need to be fairly confident that the trekking company that your are dealing with is one which you can be sure you can trust.

If you are going to a trekking company for equipment, hiking gear, camping gear and maps, then it is quite easy to shop around and compare the prices that are on offer. Most trekking equipment is available at a number of places and you will have a choice from many different trekking companies as to which type of equipment to choose and how much to pay. In such cases you should be able to judge whether the trekking company is good or not based on the equipment and the range of equipment they have available and in stock, how long it will take them to get it to you, whether or not they have everything that you need, and also if you will be able to get a good price on it.

However, if the reason you have gone to a trekking company is to arrange your travel arrangements and get your tickets and so forth, then it may be more difficult to know if you really are getting the best deal possible and if this trekking company is going to come up with the goods. Here you should really go by reputation and also be your own past experience.

Africaubuntu has put together the most competitive package deals for 2010. Our aim is to make available the best experience for the foreign guests that are expected to visit South Africa for the 2010 Football World Cup. We want all our guests to experience the beauty and magnificence of South Africa.

With so many opportunities that exist with this event, we did extensive market research and have put together this African Safari experience at some of the best resorts, game lodges, camping resorts in South Africa with Africaubuntu having exclusivity. We believe that we could be considered to be the second largest accommodation provider for the 2010 World Cup.

Our goal is to create affordability for the Soccer fan, so that they can come over to support, cheer and enjoy the magic of the event. We took all considerations into account including the World recession, as this has had an impact on all fans wanting to experience the World Cup.

We also realized that most of the current accommodation providers wanted to charge exorbitant rates over this period, some increasing their rates from Zar 500 to Zar 3000

Per night.

Our average rate per night per person is Zar 500. We can accommodate on average 600 guests at one resort as well as at others up to 1200 guests per night. Some resorts are situated on game reserves i.e. Pilansberg, so the opportunity exists for a true African Safari experience. As we have such large groups, security is of the highest standards, on average 3 *** accommodation, on site information desks, on site cell phone hire, on site entertainment, big screens which all lends itself to an incredible festive atmosphere.

Sharing the Good News About South Africa

Posted: under Uncategorized.
Tags: , ,

By: Steven ColemanAt the beginning of 2008, almost as soon as most South Africans returned to their everyday lives, having enjoyed a relaxing summer holiday, the perfect storm erupted. In quick succession there has been the unanimous unseating of the country’s President as leader of the ANC in December 2007, followed by a nationwide power crisis with regular “load shedding” which started in January 2008 and which we are told this will continue until after 2010. In addition South Africans are dealing with the perceived high level of crime (perception is reality), increasingly high levels of inflation (9.4% in February 2008), petrol at the highest levels ever and according to the popular media and dinner talk, more people than ever are considering immigrating to greener pastures.

I believe that part of the reason South Africa is going through such a great deal of mass negativity at present is because South Africans are constantly bombarded with bad news. I believe that if everyone in South Africa keeps reading, talking, thinking, and worrying about the bad stuff all the time, it will end up happening because everyone is attracting it.

After the last few months one may ask “Is there any good news about South Africa?” Yes!! After digging around on the internet, I have found plenty of good news about South Africa, which I would like to share with you to help put the constant bad news in perspective:

Cheap Petrol
Although the price of petrol in South Africa has increased dramatically it is still amongst the cheapest in the world. The highest price in South Africa is the Gauteng (inland) price for 95 octane unleaded petrol which as at 2 April 2008 is R8.91 per litre. In contrast according to a survey of 9 700 petrol stations in the UK, for unleaded petrol, the minimum price in the UK is £1.03, the average price is £1.07 and the highest price £1.19 per litre. Using an exchange rate of £1=R15, this means that the average price per litre in the UK is over R16 per litre, nearly double South Africa’s price.

Cheap Housing
Housing in South Africa is still amongst the cheapest in the world. According to the April ABSA housing index the average price for middle segment housing (Residential houses nationwide between 80m2 and 400m2 ) is just R929 000. In contrast according to the BBC News Survey of UK house prices (which fell 3.6% in the last year) as at February 2008 the nationwide average is currently (Rand figures are conservatively calculated at £1=R15):
*Detached (A house not joined to any other) £342 800 (R5 142 000)
*Semi-Detached (A house which is joined to another house on one side) £200 037 (R3 000 555)
*Terraced (Streets of houses joined together in long rows) £176 732 (R2 650 980)
*Flat (A flat is part of a bigger building where all the flats share a front door) £200 967 (R3 014 505)

Lower Unemployment
According to Statistics South Africa the unemployment rate fell fractionally to 23% in September 2007—the lowest since records began in 2001. The government’s target is to cut the rate to 14% by 2014

Winning the War on Crime
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute have conducted research on the victims of crime which shows the picture of South African crime as more typical of a developing country. These statistics show that South Africa has lower rates of violent crime than many African and South American countries.

According to the South African Police Service Statistics, the incidence of most types of crime has reduced since 2001. Their latest report for the 6 month period April to September each year since 2001 reveals the following rates of incidence per 100 000 of the population:
*The incidence of murder, although still unacceptably high is clearly decreasing 2001=22.7, 2002=22.9, 2003=21.0, 2004=19.7, 2005=19.6, 2006=20.0, 2007=18.7
*The incidence of rape, is also still unacceptably high but has clearly decreased in the past 2 years 2001=55.1, 2002=52.3, 2003=51.1, 2004=53.7, 2005=55.6, 2006=49.6, 2007=47.8
*The incidence of common assault has decreased dramatically in the past few years 2001=260.1, 2002=275.2, 2003=279.1, 2004=269.4, 2005=229.5, 2006=201.6, 2007=191.4

Stock Exchange Growth
*South Africa’s stock exchange (the JSE Limited), ranks 18th in the world in terms of total market capitalisation
*South Africa’s stock exchange ALSI (All Share Index) has risen from 7510.4 on 30 April 2003 to over 30 000 in April 2008, an increase of nearly 400% in 5 years

Sporting Successes
*South Africa are the Rugby World Cup champions
*South Africa is the number 1 ranked rugby team according to the IRB as at 31 March 2008
*South Africa is the number 1 ranked cricket team according to the ICC for One Day Internationals as at 22 March 2008
*South Africa are hosts of 2010 world cup
*South Africa has 2 golfers ranked in the top 10 in the world according to the Official World Golf Ranking for Week 13 – March 30th – 2008

Competitive Nation
*South Africa ranked 44th out of 131 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report 2007/8
*South Africa has been ranked 28th among 108 countries measured for responsible competitiveness, according to the global think tank AccountAbility.
*South Africa ranks 52nd out of 157 countries in the world in terms of economic freedom, ahead of Italy (60th), Brazil (70th), the United Arab Emirates (74th), Greece (94th), India (104th) and China (119th), according to the Index of Economic Freedom 2007 (The 2008 Index of Economic Freedom covers 162 countries across 10 specific freedoms such as trade freedom, business freedom, investment freedom, and property rights)

Rich in Resources
*South Africa is one of the world leaders in mining and minerals, with a significant share of the world’s reserves and production.
*South Africa has, according to the SA Department of Minerals and Energy, nearly 90% of the world’s platinum, 80% of the world’s manganese, 73% of the world’s chrome, 45% of the world’s vanadium and 41% of the world’s gold.
*South Africa still has huge potential for the discovery of other world-class deposits in areas yet to be exhaustively explored.

Infrastructure Development
Since 1994, the South African government has channelled substantial resources into social programs and services, with varying degrees of success.
*Households with access to clean water: 85% in 2001, 80% in 1996
*Households using electricity for lighting: 69.7% in 2001, 57.6% in 1996
*Households in formal housing: 63.8% in 2001, 57.5% in 1996
*Households with chemical or flush toilets: 51.9% in 2001, 50.5% in 1996
*Pupil-teacher ratio: 38:1 in 2003, 43:1 in 1994
*People who have completed grade 12 schooling: 20.4% in 2001, 16.3% in 1996
*People with access to electricity: 70% in 2003, 32% in 1994

Lower Cost of Living
Despite recent inflation and price increases, South Africa still has one of the lowest cost of living levels in the world. According to the latest Xpatulator (website address below) cost of living survey of 228 global locations covering every country in the world, Johannesburg is the 71st, Pretoria is 58th, Cape Town is 51st, and Durban is the 36th cheapest place in the world to live. This means that 192 of the 228 global locations are more expensive places to live compared to Durban, while 157 locations are more expensive than Johannesburg. A detailed cost of living comparison of Johannesburg and London reveals that overall London is 74.5% more expensive than Johannesburg:
*Alcohol & Tobacco (alcoholic beverages and tobacco products) is 56.7% more expensive in London
*Clothing (clothing and footwear products) is 85.3% more expensive in London
*Communication (fixed line, internet, and mobile) is 16.18% less expensive in London
*Education (school & tertiary) is 55.6% more expensive in London
*Furniture (furniture, household equipment and household appliances ) is 51.8% more expensive in London
*Groceries (food, non-alcoholic beverages and cleaning material) is 46.7% more expensive in London
*Healthcare (general healthcare, medical and medical insurance) is 92.9% more expensive in London
*Household (housing, water, electricity, household gas, household fuels, local rates and residential taxes) is 104.3% more expensive in London
*Miscellaneous (stationary, linen and general goods and services) is 180.7% more expensive in London
*Personal (personal care products and services) is 145.2% more expensive in London
*Recreation & Culture is 4.8% more expensive in London
*Restaurants Meals Out and Hotels is 219.26% more expensive in London
*Transport (public transport, vehicle costs, vehicle fuel, vehicle insurance and vehicle maintenance) is 89.80% more expensive in London

Higher Purchasing Power
The lower cost of living in South African means that your salary goes much further in Johannesburg compared to London and most other places. Using the cost of living difference, hardship difference, and exchange rate, Xpatulator calculates that if you earn R500 000 Rand in South Africa, you would need to earn £54 182 in London in order to have a similar standard of living, much more than the £33 333 the (£1=R15) exchange rate indicates. The good news is that if you move the other way (i.e. from London to Johannesburg) and you earn £60 000 currently, you would not have to find a job paying R900 000 the (£1=R15) that exchange rate indicates. Taking into account the vastly lower cost of living in Johannesburg, you would in fact only require a salary of R552 302 to have the same buying power as £60 000 in London.

In conclusion, yes 2008 will mostly be a tough year, given the short term difficulties, but the power problems and current high inflation are short term issues which will eventually be in the past.

The main reason so many people are negative is because bad news sells newspapers and attracts more listeners and viewers. Good news does not often make the front page!!

The Bottom Line of Travel in South Africa

Posted: under Uncategorized.
Tags: , ,

strong>By: celeste

With less than 10 days to go before kick off, the Fifa World Cup Soccer is finally coming together in South Africa.  Some international guests still have concerns about available transport, services, land arrangements, accommodation and safety issues.  The following post will hopefully answer your questions.

Transport

Long Distance Bussesthat travel between cities within South Africa.  These busses are comfortable and safe.  Booking ahead is strongly advised.

Local Busses

Not exactly user friendly and it can be frustrating if you don’t know your way around.  They are cheap and if you can work out where you want to go, it’s not a bad option.

Trains

We are happy to announce that the Gautrain airport link (between Sandton and OR Tambo Airport) will be ready in time for the Fifa World Cup, bear in mind that this rail link will only take you from the OR Tambo Airport to Sandton.

In general, trains in South Africa is considered unsafe and is not recommended to visitors with the exception of the Cape Town train system that is fairly efficient but does not match up to European standards.

Renting a Vehicle

Probably your best option as it gives you more freedom to travel where you want, when you want.  Remember to make sure your insurance is in place to avoid nasty surprises.

Shuttle Service

Many companies will offer shuttle services during the World Cup between cities or from the airport to your accommodation.  In fact, you can organize with them to take you anywhere you like as long as you have arranged this in advance you should have no problem.

Flying

It is expected that 2000 planes will be flying daily across the country during the World Cup to accommodate visitors.  Be sure to book you ticket well ahead of time.

Accommodation

Travel.state.gov advises that accommodation during the World Cup will be scarce and that travelers are urged to book their accommodation before arriving in South Africa.  With an expected 350000 foreign visitors simply arriving in a host city hoping to find accommodation on the night will not work.

Land Arrangements & Entertainment

With an estimated peak of 310 000 fans in one place at one time, opportunities for South Africans to create a business that offer’s entertainment or land arrangements abound.  It is advisable to ensure you are working with a reputable company to avoid being ripped off.

You can expect your travel agent to help you with flights, visas, accommodation, transport, tours and day trips.  With their knowledge and travel experience they can even advise on leisure activities.

Safety

A majority of visitors to South Africa have completed their journey without any incidents in the past.  However, the fact remains that criminal activity such as, “smash-and-grab” attacks on vehicles, hi-jacking, mugging and armed robbery is prevalent.  Even though the government has put a number of anti-crime initiatives into place, visitors must still use common sense when traveling around, like avoid walking around at night.

Recommendation

There is no reason for you to have a negative travel experience in South Africa.  We have many reputable travel companies that will look after you.  The key is to plan ahead.  Book your accommodation and transport well in advance.  Footballnights covers all aspects of your trip like accommodation, transport, insurance, services and land arrangements, all under one roof.

Five Ways to Find a Unique Travel Destination

Posted: under Uncategorized.
Tags: , , ,

By: Brock Hamilton

One thing you can always try is to find a world map or globe and choose a random point without looking at it. This is extremely fun and can give some of the best results, since you can end up with totally unique results. So what if you point to Alaska or Tibet? These make perfect destinations. If you already visited that place, just start over. The idea is to go the first place you choose that is totally new, not search for the most convenient destination.

Another trick is to buy the “1.000 Places you must see before you die” book or something similar and open at a random page. These books have the most beautiful and attractive places on earth, so your satisfaction will be guaranteed. You can get a copy from almost every library or just borrow one. This one of the most beautiful books in the world in my opinion, so you can start adding up new places every holiday.

Something else you can try is to search online for the most unusual events or festivals around the world. Find one that happens when you can travel and choose to go there. Meeting new traditions and cultures can be the most rewarding activity. From grooving on the most unusual African rhythms, to watching the Indians bathe in the Ganges, unique experiences are always available, you just have to search.

A totally unique way to travel and see new places is to go in a voluntary camp. People all over the world need your help for many things. This is a way to combine two things: helping others and helping yourself to see and experiment new feelings. From helping endangered species of animals in the jungles to supporting some kind of events, you can both travel and cut from your expenses.

Something you can try if you really do not want to make any efforts is to go to a travel agent and ask him to pick a destination that is most unusual and arrange for your trip. This is usually not as original and unique as the other methods, but it can give you some nice destinations you have never seen before. The advantage is that you do not put so much work and it works well if you do not have so much time available.

So these were just some easy and crazy ideas about how you could get a special travel destination that will give you some unique experiences and exciting journeys. The road is endless!

Great Campgrounds Around the US

Posted: under Uncategorized.
Tags: ,

Author: cameron van

Camping is a great way to see the world at very little expense.  Almost every state (in the US) and every country in the world have campgrounds that are open to the public.  There are a few that are free to use, but most charge at least a small fee for use of the grounds.  Here are a few stops to get you started on your outdoor adventures.

Alaska – Denali National Park offers several camping areas for those adventurers willing to brave the elements and the animals.

Alabama – Blue Springs State Park (located near Ozark, Alabama) is a 103 acre park that’s center of attention is the swimming pool and spring pool which are both fed by an underground spring.

Arkansas – Caddo River in Glenwood, Arkansas is a great place for roughing it in complete luxury.  It offers beautiful cabins and bunkhouses at reasonable prices (or you can just stay in your tent if you prefer).

Colorado – The camping sites at Black Canyon of the Gunnison fill up quickly during the summer months.  It offers some of the most sheer walls, narrow openings and startling depths in North America.

Delaware – Trap Pond State Park offers a unique experience of Delaware’s Cypress Swamp.  It offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities and camping experiences.

Georgia – Red Top Mountain State Park and Lodge is off the 12,000-acre Lake Allatoona in Georgia.  It offers a lot of great activities for the whole family.

Iowa – Muscatine County, Iowa has a hidden Gem in the Saulsbury Bridge Recreation Area.  Camping is free on Wednesdays (from May – October) and it offers some of the best environmental education programs around.

By: kaylaIf you first take a consider it, you will think that France is not really the cheapest place to camp. I can see why you think so. France’s camping scene is pretty much well organized. You’ll find camp sites that pretty much resemble expensive hotels. In point of fact, campgrounds have their own star ratings with the quantity of stars increases as the quantity of amenities and extra services increase. Still, don’t be fooled by quite expensive camping facilities.

Often it is these very the larger ones and don’t represent the actually camping scene in France. In point of fact, it is totally possible to have a camping in France feel without you breaking the bank. All you need is a good search of the thousands of available camping areas everywhere France and you will see a perfect campground that suits your needs and fit your budget requirements.

But the price of the camping site is not the thing that you will need to think about to go to France. Naturally, the very early to search for is a budget airfare which will actually take to the nation. You’ll find that the cheapest tickets are the ones that are booked months in advance. Some airlines might offer budget fares in addition to group reservations and airline bookings. It is rather unfortunate, or in some holdalls it is actually fortunate, that tickets are also pretty much cheaper during the peak tourist seasons such as the holidays.

The next item to skim off some expense would bee the camp ground itself. Like what have been mentioned earlier, reckoning on what you wish camping areas can cause nothing to something as costly as checking into a hotel room itself. To avoid inconveniences, you could book before you proceed once you discover the campsite you like. Still, you can have an added adventure if don’t call to reserve or arrange camping accommodations. Well if you’re traveling alone or with a life-partner, it may be fun to just go in a location in France, check the camp sites and just move on if you discover the area too crowded for your liking.

One other method to save some of your cash is to bring your personal camp gear. Pack as much gear as you might and because you need, naturally. If you purchase the gear in France, you may get into shock from the price tags they carry. If you own the necessary gear then bring them along. So these comprise tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment and flashlights.

Prepare all your gear and check your packs before you depart to see if you have gone some things behind. Even small items like batteries and even socks should be brought to hand. Not just will these small items save some funds but it will in addition save you time from going backward and forward in camping or outdoor shops in France to get what you have to have.

Camping in France is a fairly good alternative for tourists to visit a rural area. Imagine needing to walk along France’s outstanding beach locations and reach see acres of vineyards and picturesque mountain scenes through in addition to half the price of staying in hotels in the cities. France offers a much relaxing lifestyle outside the busy city streets in the truly amazing outdoors.

Visiting and camping in France without breaking the bank is perfectly possible. It has been done before by numerous campers ahead of you so I don’t see why your family can’t.
